Window grilles cost

Our builder is charging $3600 on window grilles on the side and back of the house (they are standard in the front). Basically 27 window, more than $100 a pop (Anderson windows).

Is there a way to add this later? I do feel like it looks better with them but this is so freaking expensive! How much would I save if I were to do it later and what can I use to do this? I don't this I can reach the 2nd floor of the family room but might be able to get the painters to do it.

If you know the model number of your window, do an ebay and a general google search. Seems pricy to me....

I was in a full accounting disclosure cost plus arrangement. Price seems fair and reasonable. But "grilles" can mean a whole lot of different things. You need to spend some time educating yourself. GBG obviously can't be retrofitted and is the cheapest option. SDL can't be retrofitted either and is quite expensive. You would be amazed what a 9 lite SDL would cost. And that is not counting paint.....

Pop on grilles - does Anderson even offer that anymore? I am no window expert and I have never used Anderson. But our builder grade windows did not offer any sort of add-on grilles.

I am remembering over $5k to have our SDLs on the back side

Wow, never realized they would be so expensive!

Andersen makes many different models of windows and the grilles differ from model to model so there may be more than 20 different possibilities. You need to tell us the specific model and type of window and which kind of grilles. If you do that, I can ask my Andersen supplier and get an honest cost breakdown.

This is the window: Andersen Silverline V1 double hung series: 3' wide and 4'6" and there are double windows which are 2 of those combined. I am not sure what kind of grilles they are. I think there are 3 of them from what I am reading, could you get pricing for all 3? Thanks so much!

Honestly I am not sure if it will bother me. My inlaws do not have the grilles on their rear/side windows and it looks ok. Then I saw my friends house with the grilles and it seemed so classy?

Are there 3rd party grilles that we can add later?

The Andersen Silverline V1 (1200 Series) double-hung is all-vinyl and offers limited choices of grilles/mullions:

There are companies that sell after-market grilles but they would need to fit the sash profile of this window and Andersen does not provide that information for their vinyl windows online. As a rule I don't have anything to do with windows that do not have section details online. Andersen provides that information for all there windows except the vinyl series. I suspect they are mode by a subsidiary. However, they do provide a parts catalog.

I find it difficult to believe an exterior applied mullion could fit on this window unless it was flat. You should see a sample before buying. In the photos the windows are not very attractive IMO. I would consider a composite or fiberglass window instead.

We recently decided on Anderson 100 windows and only did grilles on the front on because they were at least $100/window more with grilles.

I agree. It's better to pay for good windows up front than try to upgrade afterwards. Sacrifice for this and skimp somewhere else.

We were deciding between tray ceiling vs this (as an item to cut) and I guess we will axe the tray ceiling.

Good choice since in many areas tray ceilings are already dated.

    >tray ceilings are already dated

Here builders now go for double and triple trey ceiling.

Funny they were doing that 5 years ago here in FL. No longer. Lots of coffered ceilings though.

Wholeheartedly agree, and personally I would start over as Silverline may be the worst of the bottom end of the builders lines of vinyl windows.

We asked for an upgrade in windows but he was not offering one. Whats crazy is that toll charges 10grand to upgrade to Silverline...

To UPGRADE to Silverline? What is there standard?

Mr. Millwork, are you sure you wanna know? lol

No idea what their standard is.

I agree with trey ceilings not being built in high end custom homes in my area. Definitely pay for the window upgrade...I think the back of your house would look unfinished if the front windows had muntins and the rear ones didn't. Kind of like when people only put brick on the front...my eyes always wonder when the back is going to be finished!

Oh I definitely want to know as I would never consider Silverline an upgrade over anything except maybe a screen.

@Lily'smom The home will be around 850k, which I would say below the budget of being able to get a truly custom home in the area (might need to hit 1mill+). Silverline are standard and there is no upgrade. We are keeping the upgrades from the builder to a minimum and only upgrading things like tile/cabinets/structural items. Once we close, we will add hardwood floors and a few other things.

Unless you have seen a Silverline with grilles, I would worry that the grilles would be so flat you might as well use between the glass grilles. It takes a thick sash to accommodate a raised grille and the sash of PVC windows are usually thinner and wider than clad wood windows. Sometimes the upper sash is wider than the lower sash (glass width smaller) which is quite unattractive IMO. Adding grilles might add to the unattractiveness of the PVC sash so get your hands on one.

We have a similar sized house. Andersen 200s. We have grilles on the top half (like the colonial upper sash pictured above). To go from SDL to grille between glass was about $2500 difference. So I'm guessing that your $3600 is to go from nothing to SDL - maybe the grille between glass is a smaller upgrade price.
