Post cap material?

I noticed that the fence posts have caps on them. What material was used for this, and was the reason for using them aesthetics, function or both? I imagine they would help to protect the end grain of the cedar posts.

    Thank you for your question - those posts are copper capped for both function and aesthetic. Functionally, the copper caps prevent water from getting into the end grain of the wood - aesthetically, well, heck: copper is beautiful, especially with cedar!
