Spacing recommendations for clumping Colocasias

I'm in Houston, TX (9B) and am going to plant some colocasias near my backyard pergola in the boggy, low lying part of my yard. I thought they would be a great plant for the gumbo clay soil we have here.

I was worried about having the colocasia take over, so I was going to go with smaller, clumping varieties, like the Royal Hawaiian line. But I don't want to end up with a line of individual specimen plants- I still want the plants to grow into each other and create that dense foliage effect.

Does anybody have any recommendations on what the appropriate spacing should be for the medium size, clumping colocasia (max height 4ft usually). I've seen spacing of 1ft, 2ft, 4ft, nothing consistent, and nothing specifically referring to the varieties that don't set out runners and spread rapidly. Thanks for the input
