hi, i have successfully germinated rose seeds, but it takes a LOT of patience. it is possible that your seeds are good still, sometimes rose takes over a year to sprout, and must be subjected to a long cold period, called cold stratification.

there are several ways to do this, but mostly it is one of 2 ways - in the fridge, or outside where the seed in pots/ground will experience a natural stratification throughout the winter months. this obviously is easiest, especially if you direct sow the seed in the place you want them, as the freeze thaw cycles will naturally stratify the seed, often popping up the following spring. or often with roses and some trees, a year and half later ...the spring following after two winters...some seeds needing a cold strat, then warm, then another cold strat.

sometimes i put rose seeds through 2 consecutive cold stratification processes, with a brief warm spell in between, where i redo the set up for the fridge.

anywho another issue with rose seeds is that it takes a very long time for the seed to completely ripen. if you know of any local roses you may check them now, as the seed will have completely ripened by now...but it usually takes until at least january or feb, when the hip has turned into a totally shriveled brown thing.

the ones at ideal picking ripeness for food or medicine are not ready to be used for seed.

so if your seed is tan or brown is probably better, but like i said you will need to give them at least a year or not more to see if they will sprout.

sometimes completely fresh seeds, that havent dried out at all, will sprout with only a brief stratification.
