First thing you should know is if you plant a Meyer lemon seed, it is unlikely you will get a Meyer lemon; you may get something similar, or something dramatically different, but very unlikely you will get a Meyer. Next thing to consider is your trees will have huge thorns and will probably not produce fruit for 7-10 years. If you want a Meyer, buy a grafted Improved Meyer Lemon; it should produce fruit in 2 years or less.

The too, if you are watchful as to water your trees very frequently in the summer, you should be just fine in the gritty mix. In fact, it holds a lot more moisture than you might think. If you find it does not, just adjust it with more turface or any water holding ingredients..

Transplanting every year is just fine, but plan on doing it at peak growth in your area..About Father's Day..

Make sure to fertilize very heavily, more than you would on a tree planted in peat moss. Keep them fed a lot during the most robust growing season..Many here can help you with that and there are many threads about fertilizing....

john, so how long till i know what it is, meijer/ just regular lemon tree? the reason i choose meijer was so i can keep it in my house in winter, so if its not a meijer what do i do it wouldn't survive in ohio winters and i don't have green house. i guess just see if i can keep it alive first... also will it hurt the plant to cut off thorns as they grow?

mike, water frequently as in daily in hot months? which is fine for me. thats how i found this site i love plants but can't seem to keep them alive. no matter how much i try to and i finally figured out it was the soil. it wasn't drying out enough but if i let it dry out then its too much and was hard to get the peat to absorb water again. so needless to say i 'loved' my plants too much and watered too often.

also about the surface... it took me over a month of searching to even find turface, and the place i got it from said they do have 'turface' so i drove 40min just to get it. ended up buying 4 bags to make sure i had enough. they loaded it in my car for me (so i didn't even see what i bought) so needless to say when i got home and saw what my husband put in our garage it was not turface. what they gave me was thrifty sorb. but after looking online looks like i can still use it right? also had same problem with chicken grit. i don't know why i thought i needed both but either way i also got chicken grit but after reading i found out its starter size not growers size. can i still use it?

i forgot, how often to fertilize? i just got my foliage pro, i had read to just do 1/4tsp per gal every watering. is that enough for all plants in general or should i adjust depending on plant?and if i use gritty mix do i still need to use dolomite lime? or is that just for 511 mix?
