New plants!

As the title says, In a couple of stores last week I came across a couple of hoyas I haven't seen before so I bought them. I have googled and found bits of general info but wondered if anyone here has grown them and has a bit more information that can help, eg likes it wet or dry, grows slow of fast, That sort of thing.

They are iris marie. Small plant, dark red new leaves. Seems happy.

Camphorfolia. Small plant, not looking so great. It's new leaves have turned yellow and dropped off. Not sure how it was looked after in the store so I'm probably going to check it's roots.

Australis silver valley. I have an australis and didn't think I'd love this variety as much as I do but it's awesome! I don't know why but it's suddenly shot up to one of my favs. It's a small plant with really thick leaves that are delightfully velvety! I keep stroking it :D I want to keep this one happy!

I have Iris Marie. Grows like a weed. Prefers it drier (I water every 10 days). Is VERY susceptible to pests (mealies, mites, scale). No direct sun and senditive to frost/cold.

Can't help with camphorifolia, as I don't have it, but apparently the blooms smell like old, stinky socks.

Australis 'Silver Valley'...DO NOT overwater! Like, only water when it looks thirsty. I nearly killed mine overwatering it. It can get quite heavy, so trellising is warranted. Takes forever to bloom. Not very susceptible to pests, but like any hoya, keep watch. Can tolerate full sun, if hardened off. Not sure about cold sensitivity.

Aurora do you have any tips on growing cinnamomifolia? I have one that is not doing to well (in part do to it freezing while it was on its way here). I need to repot it as well so any tips on what substrate to use are welcome!

A loose orchid bark/perlite/clay ball mix. Do not overwater cinnamomifoila...it will decline QUICKLY. I water that one every 10-14 days. Slow to grow, for me, and has refused to give me any sign of peduncles in the 3 years I have had it. Someday!

Silver valley just dropped it's new leaves! Noooo!!!! I'm hoping that's because it's not happy with being moved from the nursery to my house. That sound like a reason? My pachyclada did the same thing when I repotted but it's now growing new leaves so I'm hoping it's a similar thing.?

Thanks for your info and help again aurorawa! I must be over watering my hoyas, I water mine every 7 days or so. They haven't died yet though :D Haven't watered Silver valley since I bought it though.

Thanks for the heads up about "Stinkysocks" camphorfolia :D Is it perverse of me that I really want it to flower now so I can sniff it?

I would have thought iris marie would like more water based on the thinish leaves, so there you go... It's shoved behind another hoya at the moment because I read it likes shade. So far I haven't had any mealies here inside. *touch wood) Had aphids on one plant and some mystery ailment on another that I sprayed just in case.

Klnko, I cant help about cinnamomifolia. Mine is snuggled in with purpureofusca and they are thriving! new vines everywhere! It's watered every week with the others. It's outside at the moment doing it's thing, so that probably helps.

Yeah, most will drop new leaves in protest of new climates! Once my cinnamomifolia is back outside, I expect more rampant growth, but I have a month or so to go! Maybe this year, it will cooperate and give me a peduncle, lol!

Shh, it will hear you and give you a peduncle, and never any flowers!

I love this cinnamomifolia. I think it's such a beautiful specimen. I'm repotting it now with perlite, clay balls, fine orchid bark and fertilome potting soil. It froze while on the way here, so it's not looking too good, all new/young growth has died and dropped off or is dying. Send good vibes this way plz </3

    It doesn't look too bad!

Looks pretty good to me too! New growth dying can mean the plant puts out more growing tips, making a fuller plant, so it could work out better in the end!

    That's Susan's eBay listing pic.

    Here it is now:

^^This leaf has frost damage now I believe, correct me if I'm wrong. But if my growing skills hold true, it will pull through!

Triffidmoss - you're so lucky to find so many varieties of Hoyas in stores near you. I have to rely on eBay or 'special orders' (wink, wink)

Yes and no. There is a plant nursery company that grows them in Aus and sends them out through chain stores. Mostly they are small plants of common varieties but they have some gems :D I think they have about 100 species? I googled the company supply list so I know what plants I may one day come across. My holy grail is Linearis and Retusa. I know they are available, I just haven't found one yet!!!

I have a succulent growing addiction (I love Haworthias and gasterias :D) so we tend to stalk the stores and nurseries frequently. Got to be there on the day or the good stuff is gone! I'm a plant stalker! I spend far more money on fabric than plants... :D

I'm lucky to find things here, I live in a state with very strict quarantine so most sellers wont post here. If I can't buy it locally I'm mostly out of luck.

triffid, the Liddle nursery is in Australia :)

I think they are located in Mareba, QLD.

And klnco, yes, looks a bit like cold damage (or just REALLY unhappy with being shipped out of warm Florida, lol).

I just got details and Email of the Liddle nursery :D Mwa ha ha! (My wallet is dooomed!)

In other plant news, I decided to un pot one of my Minibelles. This is a big full pot with lots of peduncles but it's never done much for me.The buds blast and the new growth is weak and often falls off. One vine looked withered and was obviously not well. After taking it out of the pot is was well and truly rootbound! But also it was planted.. odd? Each plant (6 in all) were encased in a small ball of stuff, like teabag fabric. The roots had grown through it. Obviously the remains of the plug the cuttings were grown in as inside the little bags it was just perlite, not soil. The whole pot was a mess of roots and obviously the water hadn't been getting through. The withered vine was completely dead under the soil line so I've chopped it and hope it will re root. It is the one with an active peduncle, strangely enough! I bought this hoya from a different nursery so they obviously had different ways to grow cuttings. Cant say if it's a good or bad way? Here's hoping Minibelle feels better! Wish I'd done this earlier, no wonder it's been sulking.

Minibelle sulks for me, as well, when she gets potbound. I tend to pot her up in a less snug pot with really chunky media (1/2 inch perlite, 1/2 inch charcoal chunks, and 1/2 inch orchiata bark, equal parts), to prevent issues.

klnko, the nursery here in Aus that supplies them is Paradisia I think it's spelled.

aurorawa, I'm hoping Minibelle will feel better now. I have another one potted up with a hoya called sweetheart (not kerrii) and they are growing really well! No sulking there. In fact, I need to move them because they are invading cinnamomifolia's space and their vines are getting tangled.

I found another fungii!!!! I can finally pot them up together to make a fuller plant. I also found another variegated tsangi, proving the first was not a fluke. Still searching for linearis...... One day...
