For my fig trees in containers I use ! These is how I mix it, 5 gallon container of Miracle Grow poting mix I spil in larger container I add half gallon of sand and one gallon of pine back molch. I don't think these is the right mix but that is how I mix it. If I plant let's say young fig tree the kind you bought then I would plant it in container that is 3 inches wider on each side and a almost same wide on the battom as on the top. I would not fertilize it these seasone! Unless after 2 month or so I would see no growth. The fig tree in ground I would not fertilize. These is what I would do and if some things goes wrong please don't blame me, you know what I mean.

I don't have more Black Madeira cuttings, maby next year.

I put my fig trees in garage for winter.

I use Miracle Grow (cristals) but only ones plant is well growing, like if I see one or two new leaves. HALF STRENGTH once a week 20 8 16. I wish you good luck Trinh.

I'm just learning about figs, and my understanding is that they will skip fruiting if given fertilizer at the wrong time.

Laturalla was from costco $24.99.. the other are from city of vancouver tree sale.. $10 each - desert king, brown turkey and chicago hardy this year

Which Costco, Trinh? I preordered fig trees too late this year. So all sold out...

Costco in willingdon - last year in Mar/April.. canadian tire ontario street has 1 gallon desert king for 12.99 hardy chicago 29.99 5 galon.. it's much better than city of vancouver fig tree for $10

Rick, where in SE Ct. are you located? As for fertilization, early and thru out the growing season fertilization is a must. A regular schedule should be set up and followed. A lot of energy is used by the tree just growing and also producing fruit. A lot of growers on first year trees will snip off any setting fruit and let the energy go into developing a good root system. As the growing season is ending, fertilization should be cut way back to allow the tree to enter dormancy.

Last Friday, Canadian tire on Marine/Ontario st had a new shipment of plants. It's only been 5 days, I dont think they sell out.

Hi Trinh, how were the fig trees you bought from Vancouver Tree event going? Did you get fruits from them last year?

If you can find pine bark mulch in bulk size in Vancouver Bc area, Please let me know, fig trees grow better with this.

Friend used to be gardener living at Pentiction,BC and She has house at Burnaby BC as well, She mentioned that Pentiction has hotter summer than Vancouver, and plants grow faster there.

For People in Vancouver, Please check your neighbor back yard fig trees now, IF you see them having 8+ breba figs per branch now, Please let me know.

Do not waste your time for yellow long neck, I have a big one, It will not get any ripen figs in Vancouver, It needs high heat to bear figs.

If you do not want a lots of work with good results in cool Vancouver BC, Just get "Desert king" and " Italian Honey - Latturala", There are good show case on Vancouver, BC Victoria drive between 44-45 AVE near bus stop, They have 3 Desert king at front and one huge Italian honey at the back.

Brown turkey is waste of time due to many type of brown turkey - not reliable, you must get the one fit our weather, My co worker chopped down his 10+ year old brown turkey, I got one from North Vancouver house due to refer: from Dany - brugmansia-quebec owner ( He tasted its figs at north Vancouver), That brown turkey grows well in vancouver climate with lots of figs in my yard now. - I made a mistake that I gave one of this away free to a Chinese who was not willing to pay me $5 for a its 15 gallon pot valve.- He paid me 2 useless 7 gallon very narrow base flower pots.

Hardy Chicago's figs taste really good but low in production in cool Vancouver BC due to late ripening. - not reliable

Same problem with violette de borderaux/negronne from different sources, I have 3 of them, only one ripen lots of figs in vancouver cool summer. - some is not reliable in cool summer area

Trinh, sorry for your brown turkey. Where did you grow your fig trees, in containers or in the ground? I also bought 3 fig trees this year, Chicago hardy, Yellow Long Neck, and Violette de Borderaux. I grew Chicago in the ground and the other two in big containers. Hope I can get something this year.

Hi Jack, where do you plant your fig trees, in the ground or in the container? Do you use pine mulch to cover the trees so it will grow better? Sounds like my Yellow Long Neck will not produce any food this year. If I had known your experience earlier, I would not buy Yellow Long Neck.

I tried them in pot, if they are good, I planted them in ground, So far "Desert king", "Lattarula"" Olympian", " Good VDB", "North Van Brown Turkey" are good and I heard that " granthams royal" is good, but mine is too small and need few year to try it out.

David, problem is that, There are many fig trees claim their named as "White marsailles" not really sure which vareities they are selling.

I have been looking for pine mulch for few years, we have so many pine trees locally , Last year, someone gave away woodchip as pine wood chips but it was really cedar, very upset.

David, most fig collector recommanded pine bark fine, I got couple fig trees came with pine bark mulchs and they fruit better .

I got my "Granthams Royal" from Bob Duncan at Victoria BC, it took me 11 hours to get it.

You have to email/call to book and prepaid It from bob, He has very limited stock and very high demand.

My G/R is very small and it didn't grow very much last year due to too many un-ripened figs, I did airlaying on branch and it is spoken for last year. I hope that tree grow faster this year.
