These are corms rather than bulbs so not Brodiaea. Maybe Crocosmia or a small Gladiolus although the one in your hand looks a lot bigger than a grape so more likely Glad. Did your neighbour not even tell you the colour? Show your neighbour some Google images of the suggestions above and see what s/he says.

If the neighbour has a lot of these things to give away keep a good eye on them. The implication is that they are spreaders. BTW the shoot goes at the top.

Thanks, floral! That was the largest one in the bag. The rest are half that size. I should have grabbed one representative of the group, but I went for easiest to photograph. I'll plant them out in a container and see what they do. He's not into flowers, I suspect these were given to him by someone else.
