when I used Ben Moore water based SATIN on an old pine floor I thought it gave a fair amt of sheen.It has worn well and I like the lustre-- but one step up to semigloss I don't think is that much different. I think you did fine.. I think matte vs. the others is where the distinction comes in. Beautiful space.

Very nice! And about your "old" GE refrigerator--our stainless steel Samsung French door POS that we bought about five years ago --the compressor (I think) just died a couple of days (service person coming tomorrow) ago after having to replace the icemaker a couple of months ago--($$$).

Well we have a GE refrigerator similar to yours--with the "snack center"--it is 29 years old and has saved us from having to throw out our food when our POS Samsung refrigerator died. Never had a service call for our old GE refrigerator--and it is a workhorse--has been in our garage in Florida for 6 years after "forced-out by our Samsung.

Don't get rid of yours.

I like the bead board. I recommended that recently for someone who wanted to add a backsplash and keep the country flavor of their kitchen. I am happy to see how well it looks!

What a lovely kitchen. I love to see remodels where you keep what you have, and just refresh it. It seems such a waste of resources to rip out old cabinets and floors if they are in good condition, just to change the style. Did you refinish your cabinets too? They look great!

Thanks everyone!! Yes we kept our old cabinets, they are quality solid oak and they still have the original dark walnut stain. I do need to touch up a couple of places and around the new knobs where finish got rubbed off. I love my built-in china hutch and we do use the dishes in them. I'm sure I wouldn't if they were in another room in a freestanding hutch. I love my little drawers! The corner one holds our daily flatware, and the cabinet above holds our daily dishes, all within arm's reach of the dishwasher. I designed it that way 22 years ago and still love it. Corner cabinet below holds more kid-friendly cups and bowls. Our nine grandkids (all under 8 yrs old!) know just where to get their cups and bowls. They also know where the snacks are.; The other drawers hold extra flatware and some party items like cheese spreaders.

I love the granite with its little flecks of garnet, which also happens to be my birthstone! It has a rounded edge, so nice to lean against!

The beadboard is mdf, came in 6 packs of 7"x32" from HD. I had to pick through the packs to make sure the edges were all okay. I was able to get two pieces out of each length. I installed it myself with a bit of hot glue and a brad nailer. I treated myself to a little air compressor so I could used my Dad's brad nailer. It fit together pretty well but I used a little caulk to fill in seams before I painted. Used SW Snowbound in semigloss for beadboard and walls. Oh, and I cleared all the photos off the fridge. Lol Now just the grandkids get that coveted spot!

I have several deep drawers but if I were designing it today I would do all drawers. Just doing some deep drawers that many years ago was a new idea and I had to convince the cabinet guy that yes, that is exactly what I wanted. I drew everything up then he redrew the kitchen and put in a tiny 30" window. I told him I have a 7' wide window and he tried to tell me that wasn't normal. I told him to stand there and look at our view, and that pretty much nothing here is normal including our 39" high cabinets including countertops. My DH is 6'7", I'm 5'11, and I'm the shortest. DS is 6'9". He got it. :)

I like your creativity. Storage looks more like furniture than just cabinetry. Nicely done.

i wonder if it would work for me. I am the world's WORST at opening doors and drawers and not closing them back. Drives DH crazy, ha

Wonderful job! Love that you kept what you liked from the existing kitchen. Appliances, for one thing, are not made to last any more. So keeping that fridge is brilliant!

Late to the party, but wanted to say how much I love your kitchen! It's lovely and very inviting. I also love that old workhorse of a fridge.

Wow! That is a lovely kitchen. And, the fact that it looks so fabulous with your older appliances and cabinets is a testament to the good design you created originally. THIS, updating, refreshing, is the kind of thing we see much too little of and it requires confidence and restraint. Way to go!!!

I also love your updated kitchen, although it's hard to believe those cabinets aren't new! You've taken such good care of them. I'm not a fan of open shelving, but I have to admit, I adore the shelf above your window! And the bead board backsplash (kudos for diy!) looks perfect in your kitchen. Enjoy!
