Backsplash dilemma

I am almost finished the renovation of my kitchen and I am having a hard time visualizing a backsplash. The cabinets are white shaker and the countertop is a grey stone like laminate. I have one wall with the sink that has no upper cabinets but hopefully soon I will build some rustic floating shelves. My design is modern rustic and I 'm afraid of getting too modern and lose any warmth to the room.Any suggestions would be great, I'm driving myself crazy.thanks, Jo

Pictures would be very helpful! I love the idea of rustic floating shelves, I wish I could have shelves in my kitchen but I live in the country.... Don't go crazy - this is your kitchen and you can take your time and refine your ideas via this forum!

Here's some thoughts to consider...1) Select a stone that has a grey tone to bring warmth..the natural stone will provide texture and feel more rustic than modern. 2) If you were to use a Country French terra cotta tile, the color would provide a nice contrast
