Problem was probably that it is a variegated form. I would move it.

Yes...I know that variegated plants can be more sensitive to sun. Just wish they'd correct the plant tag. Thanks, Embothrium.

if only the white burned off.. leaving green .... its perhaps a sun issue ...

if the white and the green burned off .. then it was probably a shipping.. digging .. planting ... sun .... hardening off issue ... you really dont know where it came from ...

being as lazy as i am.. i would probably leave it there.. and see how new leaves come out.. and respond since they were grown onsite ... and you should be over transplant shock ...

moving an already stressed plant.. sometimes.. all it does it heap stress upon stress upon stress ...

which is a round about way of suggesting.. perhaps the tag wasnt wrong ... though i am not one to put much stock in them ...

btw... when in spring did you plant.. and how long did it have.. before heat and drought set in ... there can be a wide gap between early april.. and late may .... or early june ... when talking about the best planting time ...

So, Ken, my memory is that it wasn't just the white edges that were crisped...bit more of the leaf than that. We planted it in late May and had lots of lovely rain regularly into June. I think the really dry, hot weather started in July. We planted an Itea virginica at the same time and it did fine. But the Creme Fraiche was planted along the driveway part of the border....so maybe it got extra heat from being near the macadam. I guess I was worried about moving it early enough before the weather got too hot again. (You can tell that I'm already musing about the garden even though we had 2 feet of snow this week). Thanks for your thoughtful comments and ideas. I love the look of this Deutzia so I'd hate to lose it.
