this sounds perfect for my new (under construction) kitchen. We don't have wall space to fit a socket because we'll have window walls (spectacular view too pretty to hide behind cabinets. Would the granite fabricator just have to drill a hole in the countertop and an electric socket placed under the cabinet?

@cherilee01 - Exactly. Drill 3-5/32" hole (or use an 80mm bit for the metric equivalent), drop in from the top and hand tighten the locking collar underneath. problem is they are not tamper resistant so you cant use them in residential per NEC code

We are currently going through UL with our new tamper resistant outlet model, which we hope to have ready for late Summer.

The problem is that it is designed and listed as a relocatable power tap for retrofit only.
It cannot take the place of the code required outlets for a counter top, just used in addition to them.

Fred S and Final Phase Electric, you are both right in that it is meant to be a "relocatable" power tap and is not intended to replace the existing power, but rather serve as a convenience outlet, similar to a power strip, just with the added functionality of the water tight seal and hideaway feature, etc. While it does have it's own circuit breaker protection, it is intended to be plugged into a GFCI outlet. The NEC requirements do not directly address this type of device. Tamper resistant outlets are currently going through UL testing and will become standard once approved. A hardwire version will also be available soon.

210.52(C)(5) Receptacle outlet assemblies listed for the application shall be permitted to be installed in countertops.
There are also parts of the code that prohibit flexible cord from being part of permanent wiring, and finding a wire or flexible cord UL listed for continuous movement/bending....... well, if you know of one, I'd love to know the source :)
There is one pop-up already UL listed for permanent applications, but has gotten there by a different method. Hopefully, you will be there soon.

Nobody "needs" to make their electrical system more complicated and prone to failure. Proper house and kitchen design is a much safer option. Tombstone type receptacle would be a better option if absolutely necessary. AT $320, you don't just throw these in everywhere.

Thanks Fred S. Unfortunately the Carlon pop-up is on a mfg hold because they can't gets the parts they need from South Africa.

Figures. That is part of the big reason I don't like putting exotic outlets in mandatory required places. For an additional, non-required outlet, like in the center of an island, the type in the original OP is fine plugged into a GFCI. Some places may require tamper resistant.

We are very close to being able to use these in Canada now.

Our code(s) call for a device in a kitchen on counter space to be Tamper Proof ...check! / Ground fault protected ...check! / and either T-Slot (20A , 125V ) or a Split receptacle.

I have used the previous version before in a kitchen...but Had to Give the inspector one of my children. :)

These new units are UL listed and meet NEC requirements for use in the US, but no plans to offer a 20A version unfortunately. Hopefully you have more children you can give up to the inspector...? :)

Thank you, Doug. I'm a big fan of Mockett! Now...I challenge you to take it to the next level. I'm looking for a pop-up GFCI/UL-listed, which allows the counter top surface material to be adhered to the top of the pop-up mechanism, for the cleanest look, without having chrome plates showing. So far I've only found them for the UK. Has anyone found them for US?
