yes we have done patios with the bluestone chips, but we use a compacted gravel base (4-6" deep) instead of asphalt.

Are you saying that the bluestone chips can be used in a tar and chip manner, or are they just compacted? Thanks.

Using a compacted gravel base that is 4-6" deep with a bluestone chip layer that is 2" deep would be recommended for a patio. Using a asphalt sub-base would only be recommended for a driveway. The asphalt keeps the chips from sinking into the soil because of the cars weight.
