I'm really curious... how do you prevent all those varieties from crossing? Do you cover them somehow?

No, there are no pollinators in my climate that are attracted to pea flowers that i'm aware of. In theory i suppose a bumble bee or some such could rip apart a pea flower or two, but 1. That would be rare and i have never observed such and 2. the pea flowers self-pollinate LONG before they open, so there is virtually no chance of them ever crossing naturally. Not to say impossible. Though since these are breeding peas, any naturally occurring crosses would be welcome actually. There are so many combinations of traits that would be interesting and could probably keep me busy for a lifetime.

As for the Orc gene peas they are the result of this inquiry. (For those who have never heard of it, this is a gene that ups the pea's content of beta carotenes to the point where the insides become bright orange, like the color of a red lentil.) So, Orc gene peas have orange (or pink?) cotelydons. In theory these could be more nutritious because of higher beta carotine. This is the first year growing them. I requested them from the JIC Centre in England.
