It always seems like spring when the Dogwoods bloom.

Most plants have bloomed incredibly early here, Dorothy. Today the first bluebonnet is blooming down by the driveway gate and normally that wouldn't happen until at least mid-April. I'm hoping this is not a bad omen that summer will be too hot. Some native wildflowers have bloomed early, and others haven't. It really is a mixed bag here. The redbuds are about done here already as are the fruit trees, but the Mexican plums, which bloom later than the Chickasaw/hog/sand plums are still in bloom, though waning now. All the early blooming and early leafing out of trees feels just wrong somehow, but I am enjoying seeing all the wildflowers in bloom this early. The only dogwoods tha grow here in our alkaline soil are the native rough-leaf dogwoods and they are really, really late bloomers. I think it usually is late April or early May before they bloom. We'll see what they do this year, but they certainly aren't early like everything else.
