I got one, against my better sense, last year, and despite the warnings that it needed lots of moisture, I didn't give it as much as it needed at times. And I figured it was a gonner over the winter, as we got a couple of pretty substantial freezes. Well miracle of miracles, just did a walk-by yesterday; have one leaf up and sprouts of it within a 2-ft diameter. Mother nature is most amazing!

I've had the large green elephant ears last for roughly 3-5 years here, but then every now and then along comes an extra cold winter or an extra cold/extra wet winter and it gets them. Mine has not come back yet and we've been pretty warm, so maybe this year's single digit nights got it. I'd be patient and wait at least until mid-April before giving up on yours.

If your green elephant ear or ears don't make it, just go to an oriental grocery store and look in the produce section for Malanga. (I buy it at the Central Market in Southlake, TX, which isn't even an oriental grocery store but which has a huge selection of produce.) The malanga corms will be much smaller than the big green elephant ear ones we buy for several bucks apiece at a garden center, but they'll grow quickly and give you the same big green elephant ears plants for just a fraction of the cost.
