I don't mean to be unduly discouraging, but Hotei, like most yellow flowered rhododendrons is not easy to grow. They tend to be very prone to fungal root rot diseases. Because of this, they need especially good drainage and planting with the top of the rootball above grade. They also do not do well with hot afternoon sun. Direct sunlight washes out the yellow color and heats the ground, thereby encouraging root diseases. If the bed you intend to plant in is suitable for Hotei, then there are many perennials, shrubs, and maybe a few bulbs that would be suitable. Which ones is really a matter of personal taste and their adaptability to a Hotei friendly location. It just isn't possible to generalize about plantings of any type that would do well with all rhododendrons.

Thank you for your reply. I think I will move them to a different area where there is a slight slope and more shade for the afternoon sun. My front bed will get afternoon and evening sun. I should have done more research on the yellow rhododendrons before purchasing them, but my excitement got the best of me. All you ever see in our area is pink and I wanted something different.

They all like cool soil even when the tops may be comparatively sun tolerant. This is why rhododendrons can't be grown in the deep South, even when shaded and given good drainage. The evergreen azaleas that have long been used to make mass displays there are derived from low altitude, hot climate adapted wild species.
