Odd.........

I received a coupon postcard from Bluestone Perennials in the mail today. I have never ordered from them. In fact, I seldom ever do any sort of mail order. So it is a bit of mystery to me as to why I received this. And how they even got my address!!

But it is a pretty effective marketing tool :-) With the discount offered, I am tempted to peruse the website (which I would never bother with otherwise) just to see what's on offer. You never know............

I'm guessing that at some point you either ordered from an affiliated company or they somehow got your data based on your internet activity.

News today is that Trump/Republicans are eliminating net neutrality so your Internet browsing history will be available to whoever wants it. This purportedly allows them to target you for their adverts/promotions.

Oh God... I created a segway into politics on a garden forum. As alarming as this may be... let's please keep politics out of this forum whenever possible. It is a topic that already invades life enough. I prefer it not be here too.

Tracking browsing history is one thing but extrapolating that to obtain my address is another matter altogether!! I am not sure who else Bluestone may be associated with but the last time I did any mail ordering of plants was maybe 10 years ago? That's a pretty long time to retain any information and I wasn't living at this address then anyway. I also do very little other shopping online - maybe once or twice a year at most and usually from the same source. I find the whole situation very perplexing and just a little bit disturbing........

On the matter of the coupon itself.......the only plant I want that is difficult to obtain locally - Spigelia marilandica - is sold out already. Since the coupon expires in about a week, I guess the issue is moot.

Maybe at some point you bought something and didn't check the box that said you didn't want your details shared with third parties. It is often very obscure down in the small print. Do you subscribe to any publications, for example? You could always contact Bluestone and ask them.

I just work on the assumption that someone somewhere is watching my every move. It may be far fetched but I prefer to err on the side of caution. For example, I will not stand in a group photo if it is going on Facebook and I never fill in feedback forms or online questionnaires.

So many businesses sell our information now, including addresses, so who knows how they got hold of it.

No subscriptions to any publications - don't have time to read most of them and the plant-related ones I do favor, I purchase at my nursery with my employee discount :-) I too like to err on the side of caution. I am very careful with my address - it's not on my business cards, no social media, don't even request any plant catalogs and because I have a PO box, any packaged material I might order is sent to my sister's house.

Perplexing indeed. If my info had been sold or distributed to others, you would think I would have received similar unprompted mailings from other sources, which I have not. Guess contacting Bluestone would be the way to go if I really wanted to know but think I will just let it slide.

I would have sprung for the Spigelia, however ;-)

For very good reasons these days.

woody, those are all very reasonable possibilities except that none of them apply :-) No landline phone; only a cell and that account is under a different name (family program). No property ownership. And no business listings - my business is generated entirely by word of mouth or by referrals from my nursery. And they won't give out my phone number - they call me with the contact info. And I no longer have any active membership in any professional organizations and haven't for years. Believe me, I've given this some thought and I am still mystified :-)

As to living in a 'garden nirvana', that may well be true (I certainly think so!!) but if Bluestone is targeting this area, they are not gong to get a heavy response. One of the aspects of living in a garden nirvana is the number and quality of board and brick retail nurseries available. Why order by mail from clear across the country when you can get pretty much anything desired locally? And with no shipping charge! None of my gardening friends do any sort of mail order........there is just no need.

This does not help with your postcard bewilderment, not in the least. But according to websiteinformer.com, Bluestone Perennials website is owned by one Sarah Boonstra and it has a 'vendor reputation' of 67%.

Bluestone tracks my mailing address. I made and regretted a purchase from them in 1997 and have moved three times since then (My wife likes to sell the house we are living in.) and they still mail me stuff about twice a year.
