I have seen this many places, One Green World only refers to them as a Mukrat Limes and sites discrimination as the reason. I think it is a much more polite to take that into consideration and refer to them as Makruts instead. Even if we wouldn't offend anyone here that term can hurt others elsewhere and it only requires re-teaching ourselves. That said it is the common name for the tree and I wont hold it against anyone who doesn't remember to use the proper name.

It is Makrut - you got 'a' and 'u' switched. Any here is a link of its various names. I normally call them Thai lime. Kaffir lime does seem like it has a derogatory origin.

Well Kaffir certainly does, see at link in original post. Kaffir Lily, Digger Pine, even Scotch Pine have all been pooh poohed in later years because of histories of the first parts of these plant names having been repeatedly used with malevolent intent.

Why not call it Citrus hystrix?

"disbeliever." It is one of the common translations; in the Muslim culture it leans toward "pagan"/heretic/etc.... all somewhat or rather derogatory. In my circles the tree and fruit are referred to as Makrut; but there are still a lot of people (especially on the foodie side) who don't know what Makrut means; and they only know it as Kaffir.

Another vote for it's just a plant name. Same as above you can't go looking for something to be offended about. The best chance of associating the word with something positive is this fruit. Banning words never works, changing the meaning happens all the time.
