Heruga, I have erred in the other direction...5-1.5-.5 with less peat moss bc it seems to congeal too much with more peat moss. The water runs out of my pots quickly like that also and the trees are thriving. What I do make sure to do is to water the entire mix, not just the middle or sides. I am sure there some waste in the fertilizer with these mixes because of excessive runoff, but what remains feeds the trees just fine. Plus, if you are having problems with fungus gnats, the last thing you need is MORE peat moss - that is what they are attracted to.

I completely agree with Laura. The 511 mix absorbs enough of the fertilizer mix (even though it goes through quickly) to feed the tree.

I have had my best luck with 50% garden dirt 50% compost. It drains well but holds enough water to go a week between watering in 90F days. In the winter I can go up to 6 weeks between watering but I must draw air through the root base.

I draw 15 seconds air daily for the first 2 weeks after a soaking watering. For weeks 3 and 4 I draw every other day and 2 times weekly 5 and 6. I soak my tree in a larger bucket for a half hour at each watering, lwt it drip dry for an hour or 2 and then vacuum any excess for 10 seconds 5 to 10 times and put it under the lights.
