Tillandsia ID and root question

I received this largish air plant as a gift:

I am not new to plants but I've never owned a Tillandsia before. I have two questions:

1. What species of Tillandsia is this? The leaves are thin and lack the glaucous powdering often seen on Tillandsias. Any species- specific care I should be aware of?

2. There are dried-looking roots on the base of the plant. Are they still alive and functional? Can I trim them off? If I mounted this plant would the old roots attach to the mount or do the roots have to be new and growing in order to attach to something?

thank you!
