Interesting acorn squash

last modified: 9 years ago

I saved seeds from a store bought golden acorn squash a few years back. Here in Texas we had an exceptionally mild winter and so I got started with cucurbits very early, to get a head start on SVBs, pests, and hot weather.

I planted those in pots back in early Feb. and put them in the ground in mid-March. I had to cover them once due to frost, but we should be good from now on.

Here are the plants, today:

The plants are looking very healthy, but I am very surprised, because they are not vining! They are growing more like zucchini or yellow squash as compact bush plants.

I have mulched my plants heavily with leaves as you can see.

Also interestingly is how early they are producing female flowers. Here is one below, but unfortunately there will be no male flowers for it. :(

You can see how short and bush the plant is. Very strange.
