Pumpkin vs. bermuda grass roots

last modified: 9 years ago

I'm about done trying to keep bermuda grass from invading my garden beds, where I grow mainly zucchini and pumpkins. It's a losing battle.. how bad is it to just let it be?

Main concern: will allowing it (or any grass) in the vicinity majorly lower the size of pumpkins I can expect? (I'm not trying for giants, just standard carving pumpkins that I hope won't be totally wimpy.)

Cucurbits obviously win on light competition, but I don't know about the root/nutrient competition. People on the internet are claiming bermuda roots go anywhere from 6" to all the way through to China, but I'm not sure if root depth is the entire issue anyway. Cautionary tales appreciated.
