1/2" max. Any more and you risk injury with people coming up out of the water.

good to know, we usually specify 1 -1/2 overhang with 2 1/2 thick coping - very traditional look! Also the overhang creates a shadow line to obscure the pool cover track. Assume there is not track here. Is there a waterline tile or just peebletec up to the coping?
