Groundcover vs Grass

Every year that I have lived in my new house, I have had to re-sod our backyard. Some parts of the yard get as little as 2-3 hours of good sunlight, with most of the day offering only filtered sun. In addition to that, I have a 70 lb dog who runs the yard. We have tried Zoysia each year to no avail.

My question is this: I am wanting to try groundcover instead of grass this year but I have not been able to find a definitive answer regarding foot traffic tolerance. Will a zoysia lawn (or St Augustine is another option) tolerate foot traffic better than any groundcover? I wish there was some universal measure of durability or foot traffic tolerance.

Last week I went ahead and started two pretty small areas with two different kinds of ground cover - Mazus Reptans and Creeping Speedwell. Both seem to be tolerant of foot traffic, but again, I have no idea if that is even as tolerant as grass. I think I can keep the dogs out of these areas for a summer to get the roots started. Also, the sunlight requirements for each of these seems to be conducive to my lawn. Do you think I will have better luck with these than I have with grass?

Thanks,

Tyler
