When I did a search by foliage shape, kaffir lime fits but I can't find where that is used as standard rootstock in Texas.

Please take a picture a bit further away. It's not easy to discern if it is trifolate. There certainly are other rootstocks - sour orange isn't common now, but was used widely in groves.

That looks like trademark Pomelo or Grapefruit leaves with the winged petioles no?

I assume you planted it? How old was it? Had the tree fruited before "dying"? Was it killed back by cold? Since it is so low on the trunk and you can't locate the graft, it may be on native roots. Those are huge healthy leaves, definitely not trifolate. If it's rootstock, I'd lean towards sour orange. My sour orange rootstock look similar, but the leaves are no where near that huge.

Well I'll be darned. It looks like sour orange foliage, which is one of the rootstocks used here for pomelos.

i planted tree 3-4 years ago and had yet to produce fruit. I had never noticed the leaf + petiole b4 just the big foliage typical of pomelo and grapefruit.

Why didn't I think of this b4? Called the place where I bought the tree and she says it's the pommelo. The one at their store got zapped but survived and has foliage like that.

I bought a Moro red orange as I believed pommelo was a goner. Now to find a home for the Moro red.
