Wide shallow hole no amendments spread the roots out mulch well and then water in.

The nursery sent me home with all kinds of compost and amendments. How about staking? It's an uptight variety.

Thanks tj. I've dug around the trunk about 6 inches in the pot and don't see the root flare. Aren't all JM's grafted?

They are grafted but the roots start somewhere below the graft and nursery stock is often several inches too deep in a pot. If no obvious flare at least find where the roots start.

If your a guy and have privacy pee just around the outside of the rootline "where the stems and leaves would be on the ground or where you think the root edges are. Also don't pee just in a puddle, spread it around works wonders. We have three boys and our Japanese maples literally glow, we have tukeyama, purple ghost, 8 bloodgoods, and an orange dream and were in zone 9...

What? You seriously pee on the maples? The whole family does? lol

I've read of people in the south, long ago dumping the chamber pots on the gardenias and they supposedly grew healthy.
