Charlie - A garlic round does not have differentiated cloves so you would be planting the entire round again this fall. ie. one bubil = i round, i round planted this fall will hopefully develop into a decent sized head next year but it may be a larger round or a small differentiated bulb depending on variety of hardneck.

LoneJack - The second year if it develops into a small size bulb, do you plant the small bulb or selected cloves?

I would plant the largest of the individual cloves. If you plant the entire bulb then each clove will still grow into an individual plant and they will be crowded. The harvest results would probably be more small rounds.

Depending on the types of bulbils. For tiny bulbils, they grow to rounds for a couple of years. Then the 3rd year, they start to grow into small bulbs. Always try to plant the rounds, and large cloves. Use the small bulbs with small cloves. It just takes long to grow from either small bulbils, rounds, or small cloves.

For large bulbils, sometimes they grow to bulbs the very first year. Then again, use the largest cloves to replant.
