I got a seedling from a woman's 7 foot tree in Massachusetts zone 6a planted in her yard. I plan to plant one in my yard this year. I read that the fruit can be used for marmalade.

I have thought about it but I'm running out of yard space

I got two flying dragons (dwarf version of poncirus trifoliata) in ground in 6b. Planted them last summer. The winter was so mild that they still have most of their leaves. Wicked thorns. No sign of fruits but they were may be 3 yrs old when I got it last summer.

is the flying dragon thornier than the regular species of Poncirus?

I do not think they are thornier but they are wicked thorns.

Flying dragon is the dwarf cultivar of the trifoliate - I guess you know that already. Its main characteristics, besides being slow as hell, is its twisted branches and thorns. Even in the small one that I have, those features are evident. The thorns are curved and the branches are twisted. From pictures of more mature ones it seems they can be even more twisted than the ones I have. That is why got them in the first place - it sort of lives up to its name - the flying dragon.

Now I am trying to get my hands on a regular poncirus trifoliata so that I can get on with my trying grafting. The flying dragons I have seems so immature with skinny stems.

i will be planting my P. trifoliate this Spring. Mine was originally a sweet orange but the graft died and the Poncircus took over. I think I prefer the straight species to Flying Dragon..., not crazy about the crazy, gnarled look of FD.

I have 4 PT in my yard with one about 6 feet tall and 4 foot wide. The other 3 are fresh planted seedlings

Steve, what are your plans for the 4 PT?

They are forming a hedge row to hide my neighbors 25 year old junked car she can not let go of. the engine is blown. The paint has pealed, all 4 tires are flat and cracked. The brakes no longer work and the care is held in place with concrete blocks.
