Heading Into The Spring Flush

Frankly this is a bit premature, but I've told myself that taking pictures will make the roses more eager to bloom. Some gardeners are more delusional than others, obviously.

Rosette Delizy, one bush

Mlle. de Sombreuil, Mrs. B.R. Cant

The back garden

Gruss an Aachen, the first blooms opened today

Wild Edric, a very fragrant rose

There's a little more color now in the front garden

Looks like heaven to me! I think the rain and drip is really working. Your garden is lovely, Ingrid.

Beautiful, Ingrid! That's the largest Rosette Delizy I've ever seen. As Sheila mentioned, everything is looking very happy and healthy! Carol

I LOVE (can't work out how to do bold, so caps will have to do) your photo of Rosette Delizy - it should be in a book. I hope you're posting it on HMF. Trish

Wonderful pictures! What is that purple in first and third picture?

    ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 thanked lavenderlacezone8
  • 9 years ago

Thank you, everyone. Lavenderlace, the purple flower is sea lavender, limonium perezii, which does rather well here. It's not a native but has become naturalized in California.

I took a few more pictures today while waiting for my cake to finish baking.

I couldn't resist another shot of Gruss an Aachen

Oh, My, I cannot believe it can get any better! I blew the photos up and they are so perfect. What an antidote to the blahs I'm having over high winds and cool temps! Your light in the birdbath photo is to die for.

Baking a cake and taking photos of roses, what could be better?....

Huge bloom on 'Blush Noisette' and that area with the bird bath I think is my favourite..

Can I just say, I know you still have issues with drought and soil, and your garden is not the way you would want it totally, but it's great to see things on the way back, if I can say that... there was a time I think you had almost given up...

May I relate a brief incident of mine as I wish to wallow in grief, as in my case human error plays a decisive role...

I sprayed my greenhouse last autumn with a strong anti algae wash, not thinking that I have 2 pipes connected to a rain water collection tank nearby which takes the run off. This Spring has been very dry, and I decided to use this water for some new roses not long planted. I had forgotten about the spray and wondered why the water in the can was ''frothy''... about 8 of my roses have now suffered dieback, dead canes, dead foliage, withering growth, buds dropped off... as if sprayed with glyphosate or somesuch...

Please, may I have no more of these ''senior moments''... thanks for listening... and look forward to your Spring flush with relish.... I might not have much of one here...

I am so, so sorry, Marlorena, about your mishap. I would be a basket case, but I wonder if the frequent rains you have will dilute the strength and help the roses recover. Yours was one of the gardens I was really looking forward to seeing. Sheila, I hope you have nicer weather soon. Difficult to enjoy the garden in those conditions.

Trish, I'll try to post Rosette Delizy in HMF, if I can remember how to do that.

Marlorena, I wish Houzz had a "sympathy" button in addition to a "like" button. Please keep us updated on your rose recovery!

Ingrid, R Delizy is even more beautiful up close. Her form and her colors are perfect, soft with that touch of warm gold to enhance the pinks and lavenders in your garden. Your specimen is surely one of the loveliest I've seen! Carol

Thanks so much for the sympathies..... I've flushed them through and will just have to wait and see... they don't look too good but time will tell...I'm just angry with myself..

'Rosette Delizy' is a fabulous rose... in a warm climate I imagine... but I like the way they are looking at me, and not to the ground...

Carol, I was thinking the same thing... no way I could "like" Marlorena's post, but oh, wow- that's not something any rose-lover wants to have happen.

Marlorena, I hope your babies survive, but it's tough that it's the new, less established roses that got hit; please keep us posted... I hope they don't all need replacing.

Ingrid, your roses look great and I hope that if you do end up having drought conditions again, that it holds off long enough for your newer plants to get well-established first.

Marlorena, I hope you don't stay angry with yourself for long.

Ingrid, I do hope that is Mme Lambard, as I plan to order one this Autumn. I'm removing MIP, as it's done very poorly for a couple of years now, and is such a rangy thorny beast, and putting Mme Lambard in her place.

Ingrid I love your Rosette Delizy! I had one, but it was too tender for our winters or maybe our roller coaster Springs it died along with Lady Hillingdon a few years back. It's nice to see where they shine at!

Marlorena I'm so sorry for your mis-hap and I hope your roses recover soon. I do hope you don't have to replace any!

Oh Marlorena my empathy is completely with you. I adore your garden and am really looking forward to your garden photos so I hope everything recovers well, or if it doesn't I hope that you are able to find new roses that make you even happier. I'm so sorry!

Ingrid your photos are just wonderful! I'm with Sheila... your gorgeous photos are helping me through my blahs from the late storm that blew through my yard and made a mess of all my hard work. A little retail therapy and fellowship with rosy people yesterday at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden helped my mood... but then I still had to come home and look at all the clean up I still have to do in the yard from the damn wind. I know we don't usually swear on here... is damn a swear word? I think it describes the wind we had here rather well so it's necessary.

I still have about a days worth of work to clean up the back yard.

I'm hoping if I whine enough my hubby will help out a little more today. Childlike, I know. I'm not proud of it. :-/

Branches, branches, branches and a bunch of crap just blown all over that I still have to get to. The wind blew something sharp into the drip irrigation line with enough force to puncture the hose too so I have to fix that still. Hopefully it's just in one spot. Sigh.

Lovely photos Cori Ann, I especially like the next to last, with the river pebbles meandering through your road frontage.... I should like to see more of this as it develops... I would be forever walking around that area poking my nose in...

Hi lavender! I designed it... but we paid for the stone walls and pavers to be installed. The guys who put it in were real artists and did a great job with the stonework. It's a lot of work and I really wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you have A LOT of knowledge about drainage, stone cutting, etc. The one managing the project was terrible... but it's in the past and I love it now so I try not to think about the headaches he caused. ;-)

Hi Marlorena! Just saw your compliment. Thank you so much! I actually did that french drain / dry creek bed myself (mostly... I got exhausted moving riverrock at the end and enlisted help), so your compliment means a lot to me! That whole area was a huge lawn when we moved in and has redwood roots all over in it. It was a beast to transform... but I completely transformed it. The meandering rock design was to help move the water away from the house and across the yard while also looking charming. I love it now and should like to see more of it as it develops too. ;-)

Cori Ann, you've done a spectacular job, and the design was yours even if you didn't put every single stone in place. With your huge garden areas, front and back, there's such incredible potential there. The front is already beautifully done and will be more gorgeous every year as your plants mature. Please keep us updated as it's a great pleasure to watch someone's garden mature and become a finished fabulous masterpiece (not that it's ever finished, that we all know).

Thank you so much Ingrid. I really do feel my heart swell and am filled with pride when fellow gardeners like you and Marlorena give such meaningful compliments. It seems to mean a lot more when people on this forum appreciate my garden because you each really understand and know how much goes into it. Thank you thank you thank you. :-)

haku, I'm proud to be an enabler, both for RJG and the sea lavender. Please definitely let us see how the sea lavender does for you. It would really please me if it grows well for you, as it is not happy in everyone's garden who has tried it.

I am away all week drat it, (glorious weather too!) but last night I received this photo of Mme Antoine Mari - likely contender for my first real bloom of the season as I moved Sanguinea over the winter and she's sulking a little.

I just had my first bloom of Mme. Antoine Mari open yesterday and this is the first year that I haven't taken off all the buds on this young rose. It has plenty of them this spring and the rose is growing nicely, so I'm a happy camper. I hope you enjoy your first bloom!
