Does the beige/brown discoloration go off to the left in the photo (closer to the soil line?

Is the brown area soft of beneath it soft?

If mine. I would scrape away the soil around the caudex and deeper down the caudex where the brown area is, to see just how far it goes down.

I would take a sharp instrument and carefully scrape away all brown and treat with Sulfur dust or Turmeric. Leave soil away from areas effected.

All being good. I would either leave that section of caudex exposed for quite sometime to completely heal and then fille that area with dry Perlite and soil to hold in place.

First you need to see what's going on under that brown area.

"I made an instrument for just this purpose. I took a small spoon and filed the end of the metal really thin. It works like a blade, but scoops if needed." Works marvelously.

Pretty much everything below the soil looks fine.

Would still take the brown out and treat it in case there is an fungal issues to come from it.

Pot back up and just leave that area without soil up against it.

It's actually hard. Like old wood.

I'll go buy some Sulfur dust or Turmeric and then scrape away that brown area like you said. Hopefully that fixes it.

Glad it is hard brown. It may be able to be left as is Stephane, but it would be worth cleaning it up. If you have Cinnamon at home or Turmeric spice. Use that.

What it actually looked like to me when I first viewed it. Was that some rodent of bug had chewed at it. See there are. Couple straight line marks on the other side of caudex?

Oh yeah I see those 2 lines now. I didn't even notice them. You might be right, maybe a rodent chewed at it. I scraped the area already and added cinnamon on it.
