How big is the room and where are the various doorways and windows?

How do you use the room, and for how many people do you need/want seating?

We use this room for gatherings of 10+ people at least once a week as well as for our family(5) just sitting and talking. Here is the layout. As you can see on the plan, the door by the fireplace leads to an office (converted garage) and the picture was taken from the kitchen. We take our meals at a circular table in the nook. The long wall at the bottom of the plans is mostly windows looking out onto the patio. The kitchen will eventually be remodeled to take out the wall and be open to the family room. As a side note I think the rug is 12x 15.

Having seen the floor plan, I think you could have two sofas opposite each other, the chairs where you were thinking, and possibly even another set of chairs opposite them, by the fireplace. And then you should be able to have a smaller seating area -- one or two chairs and a small table -- by the window near the kitchen.

Do you have an extra pair of chairs to try out the layout? Or even just with those chairs where you were thinking of putting them?

Are you attached to the drum pendant over the sofa? Does the larger chandelier provide adequate lighting in the room? I'm not crazy about the actual chandelier, but I do like the placement in the room better than that of the drum pendant.

What a nice space to work with! I'm not a pink fan, nor a stone fireplace fan, but yours is beautiful.

I think the space is crying out for some curves and I think a large curved sectional would really work well. I see it kind of angled at one of the outside corners of the rug. It looks like your sofa is a two seater? If so, I think a sectional could give you the seating you need without it and just the chairs, maybe one additional chair.

I don't mean a big ole squishy sectional but something more refined for your space...maybe like this?

Not sure what colors would work with your rug except those close to what you have now, but with a different rug, you might be able to pull off just about any color you want, if in the right shade.

I might have gone with (or would go with) a salmon (different rug, tho) but I love orange and think it might orange up the pink in the fireplace.

I totally agree with Olychick and think a large curved sectional or conversational couch would work beautifully facing the fireplace. For me, the plant would better work at the left corner edge of the carpet (far end from the fireplace). Some stacked pillows on the mantle would provide color and texture. Unless you are attached to the light fixtures and have budget considerations I would opt for a more eye catching chandelier. More of a statement fixture. Beautiful space. How fun.

I would add some texture, e.g. adding a rustic sofa/console table or shelf behind the sofa (i.e. pull it forward). Also, would add some art and more plants in front of the windows.

I'd probably also replace the tables...

Not this cart, but this type of wood, or lighter.

Then, get some art work together.

After that I would get rid of your side tables/coffee table and add a sofa on the end in a color.

I wasn't certain if the rug was new or would be replaced, but right now that strong color doesn't relate to anything else in the room and really stands out. For that large a room I would choose an even larger rug, but in a more subtle color and pattern so it isn't the first thing you notice. Window treatments and art would help a lot to give the room some life.
