Also I have some Bogota x Autumn Rose Lady seedlings. I think maybe I have a striped seedling?

Or could it be a result of too much sun?

A lot of my seedlings have red leaves in the first few years, but then they fade to green as they get older. The only ones I know of that retain reddish leaves (on the underside) is San Antonio Rose and its hybrids. I do love your Bogota hybrid and hopefully it will keep the beautiful white stripe :-))))

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your seedlings, this happens quite often that the back of the lower portion of the leaves are burgundy.. A nice trait but most often for me anyway, as the leaves get larger they loose that nice coloration and turn green. They look very healthy and that red stripe that seems to travel up the stem is also found on San Antonio Rose. Google it and you'll see that the leaves are just like yours. The very first site that you come to though has the incorrect picture.

I forgot to add that you have a gorgeous striped seedling there, a wonderful cross and I can't wait to see it when it blooms, it should be amazing!! These striped seedlings are just the best aren't they!! I might add that at this tender age, they really shouldn't be receiving more than a very small amount of sun if any.

Thank you Fred! I knew that San Antonio Rose existed, but I never looked at anything more than the bloom. What pleasant leaves! Maybe I'll track her down for the collection eventually!

Thank you both for the information! I have a group of 3 year olds that were my first seedlings, but I wasn't very vigilant and I didn't hover over them as I have with these more serious attempts to grow from seed.

your seedlings look very healthy and happy! This burgundy is a pigment called anthocyanin. You can say that it protects the leaves against strong light. You can often also see it in young leaves of trees and other plants. I have several seedlings with burgundy in their leaves, especially those that have Rosario as a parent. Rosario has redish leaves too and a purple stem which I like very much! And they show those markings even under artificial light!

I don't know how strong the sunlight is were you live. I had my one year old seedlings last summer outside on an eastern window sill and they just loved it! One of them already flowered this winter!

Good luck with all your babies! And please post pictures when they flower. Especially that gorgeous Bogota x Autumn Rose Lady ... I'm just a little crazy for variegated leaves :-)
