I thought it was very weird too. I've never received one through the mail this trampled. Some of the scars look old, so maybe it wasn't in good shape even before shipping.

I purchased a Hoya archboldiana via a seller from eBay and it came in similar conditions, in straight potting soil with tin foil wrapped around the root ball, the plant was also very beat up and I had to sacrifice a whole vine. The plant is finally starting to recover after six months but needless to say I wouldn't purchase from this seller again.

I had cuttings shipped to me in a moist paper towel then wrapped in foil and it started rooting in there :) guess it helped by keeping it moist and warm. Worked with cuttings!!

I think your package was just not treated as fragile. Some delivery people are rough on the packages regardless of it being stamped fragile.

Keeping the humidity at least 70 % will help the plant recover quicker and prevent leaf loss due to dehydration in the shipping process. There probably was some root damage in addition to the leaf damage. I have a small dome tent i keep my new hoyas in until the recover . I keep a tray of gravel with water and place the plants on there .The addition of a heat mat under the tray will really keep the humidity up.
