Up-potting palmatums

I have purchased a couple of dwarf palmatums for placement on my east facing patio. One of the containers I would like to use is a five gallon hyper-tufa pot. The maples are currently in one gallon pots. They are several feet tall three year olds. I read on one of the nursery web sites that palmatums like a pot a little on the snug side. It seems it would be easier to keep them watered in a larger pot. But then they are going to have to be reported in several years anyway because of breakdown of potting medium and a little costlier because of the amount needed. That's a minor issue for me. Other pros and cons regarding larger pots?
