The roots in the forceps are dead. Root rot is not always accompanied by mushy roots and bad odor.

I see. Should I try to cut off more of the dead roots or should I just leave it alone?

After digging it up last weekend, I trimmed off some of the roots and soaked it in some diluted hydrogen peroxide and water before replanting it in a much smaller container with new soil. It's completely leafless now, but still green and a bit over 3 feet tall.

Also, if the top portion starts drying out, should I prune it off or just leave it?

I would be inclined to leave them alone and plant in a 5-1-1 soil mix in a smaller container.

I would have cut off all dead roots and , as Steve suggests, put it in 5-1-1, but now that you have already replanted it, leave it alone.
