Wasps are quite common on cowpeas & yardlong beans; they feed on the extra-floral nectaries (those bumps on the stem below the flowers). Ladybugs & ants feed on those nectaries as well... a great way to keep ladybugs in the garden. I find the wasps to be very beneficial as well, in large numbers they are prodigious aphid & caterpillar hunters.

Thanks for the link! I just learned not to mess with the wasp and they wouldn't mess with me! They would fly all around me(hundreds of them on that little fence) but never try to attack. I didn't know that was where the nectar was.. thanks I will pay more attention to it this year

The nectar seems to pacify the wasps - even the normally aggressive species, such as yellow jackets & hornets. They don't seem alarmed at my presence, as long as I move slowly. I was only stung once, when I accidentally grabbed a wasp while picking a yardlong bean. Even then, it just gave me a light sting (warning sting?) and after a brief flight, continued feeding.

Ants, on the other hand, become VERY aggressive, and defend the vines vigorously. When picking yardlongs, I thump the top of the bean to knock the ants off.
