I am trying to keep adding compost to gradually improve my clay soil.

However, what do I do in spots where I have low-growing plants/groundcover? The mat-forming ones (like Iberis) I can lift up and put compost beneath, but what about ones that spread by rhizomes? Like my dwarf cranesbill geranium plants?
