I grow a lot of JM's in containers and even when I lived at the beach with lots of wind, they never showed damage like that. I suppose it is possible, but I'd be more inclined to think some sort of other mechanical damage.....like something chewing on it? I wouldn't prune anything at this point - those wounds should heal fine on their own.

Although I really favor allowing JM's to assume the shape they want, if you want a taller, more upright form, you will need to stake it. It's hard to see the base clearly but looks like a very low graft, which could explain the lean. If you gently tie the upper portions of the longest branch to an upright stake, as that wood ripens, it will assume a more vertical habit. Do not try to bend it more vertically than it can be easily managed. And tie it loosely to the supporting stake with something soft, like old nylon pantyhose or a flexible fabric tie (may need to be replaced periodically).

Not long after it leafed out this year, we had 2 different storms come through with 60+ mile per hour winds and hail. The bark splits were not there earlier this year when I moved it, so I am guessing that the damage is from the storms.

Thanks for your input, I have no problem with the tree assuming the shape it wants, I just wanted to make sure that these bark splits that just appeared are not going to put the tree at risk.

Am I seeing right that it is growing towards the sun?
