That or Otto Luyken laurel would be my guess as well. But both have the potential for growing quite a bit larger than the 3-4' stated - pruning would be required to maintain at that size.

Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' is a possibility. But its suitability is location dependent as it can be invasive in some areas.

Gardengal is 'Gulf Stream' invasive? I have never had one 'run' or throw a seedling. Unlike it's parent, which is a thug.

I live just south of Atlanta (zone 8 I believe) and the location is in full sun. I'm OK with pruning once a year or so but would like to avoid more than that.

No nandina is invasive in my area :-) I prefer Gulf Stream for its compact size and the fact it does not produce a lot of "runners' but stays as a clump and is fully leaved from top to bottom. It seldom sets flowers in my climate and if it does, they do not have sufficient time to develop into fruit. And it doesn't develop PM or leaf spot, which can be an issue for some nandinas here.

btw, both the laurels should work for the OP's purpose with just an annual pruning. Neither grow that fast.

Yeah I have never seen a flower on any of my small cultivars (GS, Lemon Lime, etc).
