Remove it from the pot and let it dry out. Be careful handling roots if there are any. Give us a picture dried out and out of the pot.

Thank you for your response. I will let it dry out. Here are some pics of it straight out of the pot- I don't know if these help you at all bc the roots are still moist. I didn't want to mess too much with the media either. I will post pics once it dries out as well. Thanks!

Next when it really drys soak it in water for 20 minutes then see if you can remove some debris without bending or breaking a root. There might be life in it yet. The last pic showed a healthy root. Extra careful with that root...

can't see it all from here, but yes the white ones matter the most! Soak and remove the debris. but do not force it. If some sticks let it be. If you can wiggle out the pieces fine. If it is stuck leave it.

Looks like there might be mealy bugs on the roots.

Oh no! :( I did as the previous person suggested and then I watched a bunch of videos and cut off some old roots and repotted the plant. My worst concern was that it would be something that would effect my other plants. Would mealy bugs spread to other plants besides orchids? Do they spread easily? I want to save this plant but not at the cost of my others. Thank you for your comment.

I don't see mealie bugs. I see sponge rock or perlite pieces. Don't use any insecticides unless you SEE mealie bugs.

I agree with suza. Looks like sponge rock or something similar.

You could also give it some rooting hormone to give the roots a boost then put it in a bright, warm spot.

Where do you live? It would be helpful to have more info. Is this plant growing indoors or out? What zone are you in?
