Only 3 flowers this year.

I have two plants in the same bed. One is about two years old, the other about 50 years.

The older one had a plentiful bloom up until about 5 years ago and these last few years scarcely had a half dozen flowers. The younger one seems to be following suit. Both sprout leaves as expected.

For the last two years we had a killer late snowfall/freeze to I will grant that it killed the flower buds but I wonder if this is, in fact, a different problem.

The is not an issue with encroaching shade they get full sun. I will have the soil tested soon. I have been giving them Espoma Holly tone (Too much? Not enough?)

The pic was taken in 2003.

Thoughts?
