Japanese maples and hostas

I would appreciate advice and recommendations about planting hostas under or near the edge of Japanese maple branches.

I have numerous red and green lace-leaved maples, dome shaped with branches cascading to within 15" of soil. (Many are even lower.) Am considering transplanting hostas just beneath these outer branches. The planting holes would be anywhere from 18" to 30" from the trunks.

Two questions: Would digging planting holes that close to the trunks do irreparable damage to the maples' roots? And would the hostas thrive? (There are some types of maples that have extremely invasive roots and seem to suck the nutrients and water out of the soil!)

Since there might be some hosta lovers who have tried this, I'm posting this in the hosta forum also.
