Cabinets and island

I am so happy I came across this post. I love the white cabinets and wood stained island, each with different countertops. I would love to be able to pull this off in my kitchen renovation. How big does a space need to be to be able to have two contrasting cabinet colors and countertops? You achieve this look very well here. I guess I'm asking how you tied it together... I just love it and it looks great but would be nervous it wouldn't work when I tried to do it. Can you do any island color with white cabinets? Thx :-)
