Is this the front of the house? Can you provide a wide angle image taken from a distance to show the big picture of the house on the lot. Hard to make any recommendations without seeing how the house and "garden" work or might work together? Is there a possibility of creating a view from inside the house thru the window? Where is this? Looks like NE? zone?

In case anyone else notices this post, I have two thoughts. One, they sell dwarf azaleas which in the NE is what I would replace an overgrown one with. Two, you can snazz up a bleak cement porch steps with pots of geraniums. Easy peasy. There are other things top put in pots but that is one suggestion for snazzing up steps. Begonias are a nice substitution if the site is shady. In the winter, buy an evergreen rope to hang in front of the railing, with a few red velvet bows strategically placed.

Weed, add a clean, neatly trimmed edge between the lawn and garden bed, and then plant a flowering evergreen groundcover such as Veronica Georgia Blue. Just looking tidy will make a huge difference. The edge can be a deep cut V, renewed once or twice a year or can be an inset brick or paver mowing strip.
