Does this stool have a varnish or lacquer finish or is it unfinished wood?

There's only clear coating and no additional varnish or lacquer finishes on this product.

If I want to make the stool grayer, what would you suggest? shoe polish? wood stain? ... or something else?

Hi,

You could use either spray paint or regular paint and brush the wood for the special gray effect.
