What should I do with this small open room if I don't want to make it an office?

We just purchased a house, and what's in the pic belongs to the sellers, so I've got a blank room to make into something, but have no idea what! There is already a formal dining room and a crafts room.

A room like this looks great as a reading - no media room. Yes, those are being requested by clients nowadays. Basically you can fill the back wall with cabinets and lovely books, put two big leather or comfy armchairs in front of them to look at the view for contemplation. Two poufs in front of that on a large rug so you can put your feet up if necessary; place a tray with tea or coffee when not. A few pictures on the wall, a lovely throw for winter days, and you have a lovely inviting room for weekends and evenings and peace

i'd make an office with a regular desk rather than a coffee table. instal glass french doors for noise privacy.

alternative would be a reading room with one or two comfortable chairs maybe leather.

Looks like it would make a beautiful office..A desk, a few chairs..No clutter..
You mentioned not having it as an office however, perhaps a nice cozy reading room..

Are you book lovers? Mini library might be nice.

I agree with deco, make it a library with a reading chair.

Agreed! I love building libraries in homes and like having one in mine even more!

Yup that's what I thought is a perfect little reading nook - lots of natural light, great spot for a gorgeous chaise lounge, or wing back...
Agreed with everyone, it would make a wonderful reading area! I am inspired to get to thinking about where I'm going to put one in my house.

Reading room or a zen room. Somewhere you can go and relax or maybe do yoga.

Book nook! Love that idea. =D
The book nook is a great idea. Only to suggest something different than the others, and since we entertain a lot (card games and such),.. How about a wine bar or "coffee bar" for cards or game night? Sort of a "Starbucks meets the corner bar". :)

I think it's a great idea...and I think the room could pull off both ideas. =)
I'd go for a small entertainment area that can satisfy you needs, think about the kind of activities youve always wanted to take home, reading, writing, sharing drinks or games or simply enjoying a good company. take into account all the members of the family and their interests, that should give you a unique idea to fill your space. My suggestion, an entertainment room with a small bar and games.

My first thought was a library also.
So many wonderful ideas!!!! I was sold on the reading room, but then I say the card/game/wine/coffee room!!!!
I would use a library every day, but the entertainment conglomerate maybe monthly.
I think a "pretty" office with a good reading chair and bookcases.
Well, my family loves to read books and drink wine and coffee, so I think y'all are on the right path with these fabulous ideas! My only question is that I would LOVE to add French doors, but the opening isn't framed. Will it still be possible?

Yes, you can add French doors. Some come with the frames. A contractor would have to frame out the area to install them. Do you have a patio on the other side? You may have to add a landing or steps on the exterior unless the ground is level to the room floor.

Paige, Adding a double door in lieu of the window has a few caveats...if this is the corner of the building and the door will cut into the standard 4' bit of wall that creates "shear" value for the house, some prescriptive measures might be necessary. The exterior siding and interior drywall would need to be repaired and repainted after the installation, a stoop or steps would need to be installed and the electrical wiring below the window may need to be rerouted as well. What about a single glass door as opposed to a double?

I think Ironwood is right on that the "game room" "coffee house" "library" or "wine bar" can be incorporated into the same space. I see people reading at Starbucks. :) I would like a space to adjourn after dinner for coffee or drinks without the kitchen "mess". Who says you can't play games in the "reading room"? I don't get it that you would only use the space monthy if it was a "game room". Of course, designed with multi-function in mind.

I also vote for a game room/coffee room, per Ironwood and Darzy :) --

Ironwood, I'm not wanting to put French doors to the outside, I meant to close the room off to the hallway. Ed, love the first two examples you posted!

Why do you want to close it off?

Make it into a reading room/den. But in some nice bookshelves and really big comfortable chairs. Chesterfield chairs come to mind. Here is a link to some great chairs. http://manhattanhomedesign.com/shop-by-category-chairs.html

Love the full wall bookshelves and think chesterfield chairs would be awesome. I bought a pair from Manhattan Home Design for a client and they are really nice chairs.

Paige, I like the idea of French doors in the opening...just the reality of it bugs me. if you want the open feel with the doors as detail and leave them standing open all the time...they block precious wall space. closing the doors then makes the space less inviting and, well, closed, even with the glass. How about trimming out the opening as a cased opening with no doors? If you use a standard jamb size, doors could be added later? I'm a leather club chair fan...I see antique leather French "mustache" club chairs in the shops around here...

Reading, coffee, wine, books, shelves, games, club chairs, leather...sounds like my living room!

Have to agree with Mr. Ironwood -- I have a tiny den, 12 x 9 with lovely glass french doors, but they sure take up a lot of space when they're open. I love the look, but I rarely close them, and open they really are kind of in the way.

Excellent point on the French doors, Ironwood! But then I had to google French mustache club chairs in order to learn my new thing for the day. I don't mind the mustache shape at the top of the chairs, but the fat arms seem unneccesary .

What do you need in your house? A breakfast room? A craft room? A play room? An exercise room? An art gallery? (I had a client ask me for one of those). Don't ask us! Ask yourself! But if it were my home I'd make it a getaway space where I could escape the rest of my family! I'd put a gorgeous chaise lounge right in the middle of the room and hang my favorite art work and put a shelf with my favorite books. And I'd drape my favorite fabric. I'd also use it as my experiment room by making my chaise a neutral color and then playing with the rug and drapes every time I got a hankering for a new color scheme... but then that's me. What would YOU do?!
Leave the room empty until you're all settled in. The room might then just become what it's meant to be and you can decorate accordingly. So many avid readers are now using Kindle or IPad and shelves call for "stuff" including books to fill them. I say "wait and see".

So right Carolyn! My iPad will never replace my giant photo filled books on design, art and architecture or the feel of a book in my hands, the smell of the ink and paper, the krinkle of the binding. The bindings and dustcovers add ambiance and color to my rooms and the "stuff" I collect adds to the eclectic style I love. Oh...and those mustache chairs do come with narrower arms sometimes!

where is the tv? make this a tv room and ban tv from the living room. put a sound proof door on the tv room.

If you have a piano, this would make a great music room. The piano and some bookshelves for storing sheet music and books could go along the solid, interior wall. A chair or love seat and a small table with a lamp would complete the furnishings.

If you have children, a playroom.
