T. edithae maybe.

The person I got it from thought it might be chiapensis but I'm not so sure

It's possible, there are multiple plants that look similar.

As an air plant newbie, I wouldn't dare to contradict Raxidor and Gonzer, but I have a clump of chiapensis, and an edithae, see pics below

I'd like to think yours is chiapensis because that how they clump. Edithae pups along the stem. I had 1 pup before on the plant but unfortunately I watered it to much and killed it. I was able to cut it off plus about 2" of the stem to save this plant.

The other one I could think off is could it be a clump of harrisii?

edithae - I need to note that the person who gave me this piece told me this is edithae. I didn't buy it so I don't have a tag.
