May Euphoria

Hey everyone,

How about we use this thread as a place to show all of the progress that your budding out plants are making? I'll add some photos tomorrow of my trees that I'm sure will have alot more progress after the 28 degrees.

Not a whole lot happening here yet, it's going to be alot at once. Russian Almond and a dwarf Forsythia are blooming

You're right about everything happening at once. I have never seen the trees and shrubs so aligned. For some reason my crabapple was the first one out. I will be uploading lots of photos soon.

I have the following trees a couple days away from full leaf out

: weeping willow, red rocket maple, crimson sunset maple, prairie splendor maple, river birch, red oaks, black locust.

Hope everyone is having a happy May long weekend. It's definitely my favourite month. Here are some pics from today.

The saga between me and quack grass continues, as seen in the far back corner of this bed:

Johnny jump ups have taken over this year:

Although tulips in the south are almost done, the ones on the north side are in their prime:

One of my favourites, Silver Mound Sage:

I love this wooly Snow in Summer, much more compact than other varieties:

Prairie Joy rose is leafing out more vigorously than most other roses:

Divine fragrance and a splash of cheery bright white colour from Bridal Crown daffodils:

Not pictured - I am also growing some amazingly lush dandelions! Right now it's more like 'weeding and moving stuff around' rather than 'gardening'.

prairie_northrose, I noticed the cactus in the background of the cushion spurge picture -- do you happen to know the variety? Does it reliably overwinter? Intriguing! I know there's a gardener here in Edmonton with a semi-famous cactus garden. I've never seen them in stores anywhere, though.

Everyone's plants look wonderful. This is my favourite time of year.

Hi Jocelyn, a fellow gardener passed it onto me, unfortunately I have no idea what variety it is. It gets pale yellow flowers in the summer. Yes, it is very reliable, I have it directly against the south foundation for the last three years where it gets no rain and no snow cover, and it is slowly increasing. No die back and very low maintenance. I give it the occasional watering, and in the spring I use a leaf blower to tidy up any leaves which may gather around it. I had it planted in the garden before and found it rots if rains too much. I've seen cactus for sale at Golden Acre in Calgary. I hear there is also cactus which grows wild in the Drumhellar area. If you are interested in some and find yourself in the Olds/Airdrie area, send me a private message and I'll be happy to give you a clump. The only drawback is it can't be handled with gloves, even my toughest gloves became stuck with very fine short needles after. I've learned to maneuver it with tools only.

Wow, that is so cool. Thanks for the info! My parents live in Calgary, so perhaps a good excuse to check out Golden Acre next time I'm visiting them! Happy planting :)

Last day of May, what a warm day, pics from this morning:

Finally planted 'Tangerine Gem' marigolds in the ground:

I can't remember the name of this one, I like the colour:
Great to see 'Bartzella' itoh peony come back so strong:
Lots of buds starting on Rosa 'Wasagaming' and others.
First bloom from first-time seeded geraniums!
Geranium 'Rozanne' came back strong. Even after being moved late last year, it did not like roots disturbed at all:
Rose 'Winnipeg Parks' coming back strong:
Looking forward to what June brings!
