Flowers and buds going brown :O(

howdy roo! I was hoping someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm kind of a purple thumb..kinda tend to kill plants..then revive them. I'm still shocked the plants i have are still alive...

I've gotten the AV bug..I do have others that I've so far havent killed..but they are still small and not to the flowering point yet. I did kinda half kill the one my mom received from someone about a year ago (how i first got the av bug)...i gave it too much water..but it has since grown so much and just started to flower..so i kind of have this system to bottom water them..its what i do to water my succulents. I picked these noids up at home depot..they were soooo pretty..sooo many buds..the dirt is a little foreign to me..it looks like coir..i'm not familiar with that so i'm not sure if it holds water more or less..but i've had them for almost two weeks..the flowers started to turn brown on the edges monday..and buds turning brown...the dirt isnt overly wet..i've stuck my finger down to the bottom..its just barely moist..i've only watered them once..I put them on a table thats somewhat in front of my south facing window..I have a white curtain (not sheer) which is where I have the other av's growing..in the picture i have them under my grow lights..its cloudy today and wasnt sure if maybe they werent getting enough sun..i dont see any changes in the leaves..its just the flowers and buds..

sorry long winded..i tend to type a lot lol..I do have plans to repot them..just havent yet..havent had the funds..and didnt need to until i received these and being unfamiliar with the soil

Hi Heather! Just my 5 cents here! First,,,flowers don't last forever on anything. Your violet was grown in a greenhouse (optimum conditions, never had to wait for food or drink), transferred in dark boxes to some store that probably let them sit til they got around to them, put on a shelf, under whatever light was available,,,watered???, maybe or maybe not, then you brought it home.

Your plant looks good. To me the only thing it is suffering from is flowers getting old. And remember, those plants have been handled by people hurrying to get them packed, processed, shipped and sold. They could have bruised the flowers and that doesn't fix itself.

Now if you have some buds that are turning brown without opening, that could be nothing more than all of the above. It is normal that they rebel at change in their environment. Just trim off the old flowers and any dead buds. No sense letting them zap energy from the plant.

And, please don't stick your finger all the way into the pot. You may be damaging fine feeder roots. If you need to know if any plant needs a drink, train yourself to pick up the pot and feel the weight of it. Here's how. Right now your pot seems to be moderately watered. Not totally dry, but not flush with water. Try to feel how heavy that pot feels. Now in about 4 days, lift it again. The more water that evaporates makes the pot feel lighter and THAT is when you water.

If you want to only water from the bottom, that is one way. First, water enough into the top so water just starts coming out the bottom holes, That starts capillary action, then make sure that you let that plant sit in that water for at least 1/2 hour so it can COMPLETELY soak the root ball. Then you can drain the excess. Don't forget at this point to pick up the pot and feel how heavy it is for comparison. And remember, just because water runs out of the bottom of a pot doesn't always mean the entire root ball has been watered. And that is what you have to make sure of. If you haphazardly water, some of the soil remains dry and those roots will die off. The problem will escalate and you will be wondering why a little water once a week left you with a dead plant.

Even if you water always from the bottom,,,,every now and then you have to water from the top to flush out any chemicals, fertilizer salts etc that have stayed at the top of the soil level because the plant always "soaked upward".

As far as transplanting, that is a whole 'nuther chapter! Don't be in a hurry to do it just yet. Learn a little more, and let your violets acclimate to their new home!

There is so much more info I could give you,,,go into the prior posts and you will find so many more suggestions! But I really don't think you have a problem at this time to worry about. Good luck. Rosie

thank you..i just didnt know if there was something i was doing to cause them to go brown or just spent..but the buds were going brown..it made me worry that i had done something to them lol..they were so pretty in the store and the first week i had them..and then went downhill..and normally when i get a plant..it does great..then it goes downhill..then i revive them..

they were very light when i bought them..and bottom watered them that night..and havent since..when the flowers started to go brown i held off on watering..but i know i need to by how they feel..their weight..the coir made me a little nervous honestly..

transplanting for me would be to change the soil..i'm usually a waterer..and prefer things that allows a little bit more drainage because of this..i've held off because the other AV's were doing fine..until these two.

I have been on here and the rest of the interwebs..i'm always trying to get as much info to all of my plants..i just wasnt find much on brown flowers and blooms..and just wasnt sure if they were spent flowers..or i was doing something to them and not realizing..

thank you once again! I feel a lot better
